30 Things to Do To Keep Entertained While Stuck at Home

March 14, 2020 wordpress

Avoid getting cabin fever or feeling cooped up while stuck at home by entertaining yourself and your family in creative ways. Reframe being home by seeing it as an opportunity to take a pause, rest, and get healthy in mind, body and spirit.

  1. Read. Dive into a book that you’ve been meaning pick up. If you need some ideas, I have some for you. Check out my posts on Five Books to Read for Self Development, Five Summer Reads, or 10 Books Written for Women by Women.
  2. Practice meditation. If you are new to the practice, there are apps that can guide beginners, helping to make meditation a daily ritual. Apps I recommend are Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer.
  3. Workout. There are plenty of free resources that making working out at home easy and fun. Look on YouTube for guided workouts that walk you through any type of exercise routine you desire, from yoga, to pilates, to HIIT.
  4. Cook. Being at home is the perfect time to learn how to cook something new. Use the internet, cook books, or TV stations like Food Channel to get inspired on what to learn next, whether it be learning how to make the perfect pomodoro sauce or pumpkin bread from scratch.
  5. Organize. A clean home is a happy home! Nothing feels quite as nice as an organized house. Tackle one room per day, and see how much better you feel when you can actually find that shirt you thought you had lost, the exact color lipstick you want to wear, or find the spice the recipe calls for, in a few seconds.
  6. Create a Self-Care Ritual. Taking care of yourself should be top priority, in both body, soul, and mind. A solid self-care ritual can help you destress, relax, and show yourself some love.
  7. Hone your Skincare Routine. If you’re staying in, there should be no need to wear makeup, so now would be the perfect time to hone your skincare routine! For a guide on skincare best practices, using my own line Caviar & Cashmere Skincare, visit this post.
  8. Learn a New Skill. With extra time on your hands, what better way to spend it than by learning a new skill? Whether it is learning how to play the piano, do calligraphy, or code a website, there are so may resources on the internet to help you learn something new for free.
  9. Learn a New Language. ¿Por qué no? Utilize apps like Duolingo to start studying a new language!
  10. Journal. One of the most cathartic things for me is to journal. I like to free-write, especially when I have a lot on my mind. Free-writing is a brainstorming strategy developed in the 1970s that allows your mind to write freely, without any judgement. You don’t have to worry about correct spelling, punctuation, or grammar, as no one is going to see it. This practice has helped many people let feelings out on paper and release from their mind.
  11. Binge TV. There is nothing wrong with finding a great TV series and binge watching it! TV has the ability to take us out of our heads and get lost for a little. I recently binged Love is Blind, Succession, and Schitt’s Creek.
  12. Try a New Hairstyle. Watch YouTube tutorials to master a new hairstyle you’ve been meaning to try, like a French braid or chignon.
  13. Take an Epsom Salt Bath. Relax in a hot bath with candles, a book, and some Epsom Salt, which is considered to ease pain and relieve inflammation, making it beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma, and migraines. If you don’t have Epsom Salt, you can DIY a relaxing Honey Rose Milk Bath, and I have directions here in this post.
  14. Digitize Your Photos. One thing I did last year, that I will never regret, is I took the time to digitize all of my family photos. It is a great way to reminisce, as well as secure your cherished memories. I used this scanner to do it.
  15. Make Art. Sometimes we forget the simple fun activities from when we were kids. Painting brings me so much joy, and I usually forget about doing it on a rainy day. Other fun artistic things to do are sketching and coloring books.
  16. Take a Eucalyptus Shower. This is one of my favorite things to do for self-care. Read about how you can make your own here.
  17. Teach Your Dog a Trick. If you have a dog like I do, a fun thing to do is try to teach them new tricks. The internet has a lot of articles on how to do so, even if it is as small as learning to shake.
  18. Make a Vision Board. Whether you made a vision board at the start of the new year to lay out your resolutions and intentions, or never have done so before, there is never a bad time to create one. Use old magazines and newspapers to cut out and glue onto a blank piece of paper or poster board, and when finished, display in a place you’ll see and be reminded of it every day.
  19. Indulge in Wanderlust. You may not be able to travel right now, but there is no reason why you cannot dream up your next perfect vacation. Make a list of places you want to visit, and start doing research and making itineraries. Some places on my list are: Kenya, Tanzinia, Mozambique, Tokyo, Peru, Portugal, New Zealand and Fogo Island.
  20. FaceTime with Friends. Have happy hour over FaceTime with your best friends!
  21. Purge Your Social Media. Go through who you follow and have access to on a daily basis, and make sure they are providing value when you scroll your feed. If you have people on your feed that do not bring you happiness, or put you in a negative headspace, clean them out and unfollow.
  22. DIY. There are so many fun things to DIY at home, the options are truly endless from starting your own garden, tie-dying clothing, or making paper chandeliers.
  23. Play Games. My personal favorite is backgammon, although I have an arsenal of fun games at home for rainy, lazy days like Monopoly, Chess, Twister, and Scrabble.
  24. Clean. Clean things you may not otherwise have time to, and may overlook but are just as important as the regular household cleaning you do. Start with cleaning your makeup brushes with makeup cleaning soap and throwing away all of your expired toiletries.
  25. Practice Gratitude. Start a gratitude journal, and write down all of the things you are currently grateful for, whether they are big or small. There are proven scientific benefits of gratitude, some being opening the door to more relationships, improving physical health, improving psychological health, enhancing empathy and reducing aggression, among other benefits.
  26. Take a Virtual Museum Visit. Many museums are offering virtual tours where you can go room-by-room and even zoom in on pieces.
  27. Support Local Businesses. Tired of cooking? Support your local businesses like small, family owned restaurants by ordering take out or delivery.
  28. Send Handwritten Notes. How exciting it will be for one of your friends or loved ones to receive a thoughtful handwritten note from you in the mail.
  29. Enroll in an Online Course. Build your skills by taking an online course   top universities like Yale, Michigan, Stanford, and leading companies like Google and IBM using Coursera.
  30. Feng Shui Your Home. Look into the rules of Feng Shui, and rearrange your furniture and decor accordingly. Based on the idea that your living space reflects your life, feng shui strives to achieve balance in both. Feng shui holds that all objects possess an energy called chi, and that you can use this chi to bring luck, wealth, and opportunity into your home. An example is moving your bed away from the window. Feng shui is strict on the rule that your head should never be under a window while sleeping!
