Tommy Hilfiger's Prep World
Tommy Hilfiger and high priestess of prep Lisa Birnbach, co-author of The Official Preppy Handbook (1980), launched Prep World in New York on Wednesday, an updated and contemporary spin on old-school summer prep that comes fully laden with paraphernalia and its own "drop-in" concept store reminiscent of a Hamptons beach house, set to appear, briefly, in the unlikeliest of urban settings: opposite the chic Meatpacking eatery Pastis, as well as in Paris, Stockholm, London, Milan, and a host of other cities. The New York store will remain open for only four days before it moves onto its next location. You will fall in love with all the fashions and Hilfiger will inspire you back to prep. Mannequins styled in chambray sailor shorts and distressed anchor tanks and bandanas of every color. The palette is refreshing as well, bright yellows and Kelly greens paired with navy plaids and crisp whites. Layering is key and mixing prints and patterns in unique, unexpected ways breathes new life into the old school prep trend that has often been overlooked.
