Have you ever wondered how celebrities on the red carpet have such glowing, perfectly clear and smooth skin? Many of them owe their flawless faces to celebrity facialist, Joanna Vargas.
I have been trusting Joanna Vargas and her team of experienced estheticians since she opened her second spa location in Los Angeles (her first, in New York City). Since then, I have sworn by her “Triple Crown Facials” coupled with a religious skincare regimen consisting of all of the products from Joanna’s loved line.
But before I learned about these celebrity skincare secrets, I, like many women, was overwhelmed with how to even begin crafting my own skincare regimen. Facials, serums, and retinoids can be intimidating, and I think it’s easy to procrastinate or even not begin if you don’t know where to start.
I sat down with Joanna Vargas herself, to chat about a beginner’s approach to caring for your skin, from morning to night. She demystifies the process of self-care in a simple, straightforward way for the every day woman.
Q: What is your morning routine?
A: My morning recommendation would be rinse the face with tepid water, dry and follow with a day serum. Here we always recommend my Daily Serum because it’s a light formula suitable for all skin types that won’t clog the pores.
Q: How did you formulate your Daily Serum?
A: Daily Serum was inspired from my love of green juices. It contains oat grass juice, which boosts your lymphatic system and chlorophyll which oxygenates the face. You will look glowing and fresh, even when you don’t feel it!
Q: Do you follow up with anything else, like a moisturizer?
A: We then follow with my own Daily Hydrating Cream, which contains shea and cocoa butter. Using Shea butter as a moisturizer has been clinically proven to reverse the signs of aging and erase wrinkles. Cocoa butter is great because it melts at body temperature, so it’s perfect for good penetration before makeup.
Q: What is your evening routine?
A: For night we always make sure people know that cleansing is the most important step. You don’t want to go to sleep with makeup on or residue. I made my Vitamin C Face Wash for all skin types, no matter if you have acne, mature or dry skin, so I highly recommend starting with that. It really cleans out the pores and gently exfoliates so the skin can more easily accept the amazing ingredients in the rest of your routine.
Nighttime after cleansing, I like to use my new retinol serum, the Super Nova Serum, to stimulate collagen production and to completely resurface the skin while I sleep.
Finally, exfoliation is my secret weapon to having great skin. It’s the most often skipped step in people’s home routine but it really makes a huge difference in the way your skin looks and feels. Think of exfoliation as your way of creating a perfect canvas for your products and your makeup. You could be investing in the most expensive amazing skin care products at home, but if you don’t exfoliate, those ingredients won’t ever penetrate to make any difference at all. I love my Exfoliating Mask because it has galactoarabinan and lactic acid for brown spots and cell turnover, and volcanic ash for pulling impurities out of the skin.
